For sometime we've been thinking about adding packages for smaller social events, such as wedding anniversaries, reunions, and even small weddings. In visiting with a few other photographer friends, we've come up with a couple small packages.
The $299 package has 10 8x10's. There is also a 20 8x10 package for $449. In order to keep prices low, we visit with you before the event and make a list of the photos you want. Time is also limited to one hour for the $299 package. The $449 package is for up to 2 hours.
Some photographers are finding that people will book these type packages for a not-so-small wedding. Perhaps they have friends that are amateur photographers who are good at candid photography, but the bride wants to makes sure they don't miss the really important traditional wedding photos. With the $449 package, we could do a few photos of the ceremony, the group photos, the bride & groom, and perhaps the cake cutting. You get 20 8x10's. Then rely on your friends for all the pre-wedding and reception candids. Even the $299 package would be good for just group photography.
Our newest digital equipment makes it feasible for us to offer this lower price. Our location lighting set up is much more portable and lightweight than anything we've had in the past!

Barnes Anniversary

Friends gathered in front of the Bella Vista Country Club to greet Brad and Kim.

On Friday, February 13th, we attended a surprise anniversary party for Brad and Kim Barnes. The event was held at the Bella Vista Country Club. Brad has been a fireman with the Bella Vista fire department for many years.
Brad and I go way back. I first met him in 5th grade, when his family moved here from Oregon. His dad had been raised in this area, and moved the family back to Arkansas after Brad's mother passed away. Brad and I were good buddies all through school. He was our senior class president, I was secretary.
Brad's grandparents, Roy and Vera Barnes, lived in Oak Grove, so I knew them for many years. Roy was our school bus driver.
In the fall of 1975, Roy and Vera celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. They asked me if I'd take photos. Brad and I had been on the yearbook staff together our senior year. I was the photographer, Brad was sports editor. It was the very first event I was paid to photograph.

Berryville Valentine Revue

A Look Back

I was recently thinking about some of the "high-profile" events that I've had the opportunity to photograph. I thought back to the time a bride-to-be and her mother came into the studio to book her wedding. Her name was Melanie Breedlove.
After visiting, they decided to book. The wedding was at Big Cedar Lodge. I got all the information I needed. They were about to leave when the mom told me, "Melanie is a former Miss Teen Missouri and was in the top 3 of the Miss Teen USA pageant". I was surprised and felt very honored to be chosen to photograph the wedding.
I went on to say you never know who you might run into in business. She then asked if I knew who Ewing Kauffman was. I knew the name rang a bell, but couldn't think who he was. She said, "That was George's (the groom) grandfather. He used to own the Kansas City Royals". Ah, yes, that's how I knew the name, Kauffman Stadium!
I was doing some only surfing, and thought I'd see if I could find any information on them, since it's been well over 10 years since doing their wedding. I found this link, along with a photo taken by me at their wedding.

We did a fun session this week, a gospel music group. Known as "Spoken 4". One of the groups members, Tommy Fairchild, has been in the gospel music industry for over 60 years, and is a member of the Gospel Music Hall of Fame.

Wedding Email......What A Nice Response!

I hate complex business situations!
Several years ago, we started offering a simple wedding package. This came about after years of seeing brides struggle, trying to decide which photos they want in their album, what size they want them to be, how to layout the album, and edit them down to fit the package they chose.
I felt that weddings were a no-win situation when it came to the business. A bride would book a certain wedding package, with X number of prints....8x10's, 5x7's, 4x5's, etc. In photographing a wedding, you ALWAYS take many more photos than is included in the package, mainly because it's a "once in a lifetime" event, and you don't want to take a chance on missing a special moment.
This creates an unfair situation for the bride. Do you eliminate many photos you'd like to have in your album, or do you spend more than you'd planned, to get the album you want?
After being the "father of the bride" four times in three years, I looked at weddings from a different perspective. Keep things simple. No surprises in prices. Yes, it's important what you pay, but more important is, "What do you get for your money?"
We began to offer an "all inclusive" package, no extra charges.
Most all photos from wedding included in album.
No extra charge for high quality album.
No extra shooting fees.
No location fees (within reasonable driving distance).
Now the scary part. We began to offer layout and design of the album. I photograph the wedding, give Kelly the digital files, and she does the album layout and design. We then do a "proof" of the album, and present that to the couple. They are encouraged to make any changes, add or delete photos. I feared this might be a real hassle, having to go back and make changes. However, I'm often pleasantly surprised when we get an email like we received today.

"(bride and groom's names) love the wedding album that you did for us. We love everything you did and don't need any changes done to it. We would love for you to order it for us."

Over the past 2 years of offering this plan, we've seldom made more then 2 or 3 changes to an album! I must give Kelly the credit for her layout and design talent!

I want to offer value. Much of our 30 year business success has come from word-of-mouth advertising. Some of the best business advise I remember from early in my career came from a successful photographer. He told me, "Build your business on quality, not cheap price. Quality clients will stay with you. Cheap clients will leave when they can find products a dollar cheaper somewhere else".
Certainly in these tough economic times, we don't want to waste money. The most disappointing waste is when we pay money for something, and it does not live up to our expectations.
One of my favorite quotes on pricing is from John Ruskin (English Writer and Critic of art, architecture, and society, 1819-1900) who said "There is hardly anything in the world that some man cannot make a little worse and sell a little cheaper, and the people who consider price only are this man's lawful prey."

$130 Winter Senior Portrait Special

Occasionally someone asks, "Do you do Senior Portraits during the winter months?" The answer, "Certainly!"
We have planted various types of shrubs, trees, and bushes that give us nice settings year-round. Our river cane area is always green, as are our pines, densiformis yews and holly bush. Here's a sample of winter outdoor portraits:

The barn and creek areas also work well in winter months. However, you might not want to get too wet in the creek!

Depending on who you believe, we are going to burn up from global warming or freeze to death from another ice age. Or maybe things are just going to be ok.
Sort of reminds me of one of my grandmothers, she'd worry if she couldn't find something to worry about. We always remember the time my brother, Terry, and I were going to go "coon hunting" as teen agers (note: gave that up a LONG time ago!). It was a cold, winter night and Granny said, "Be careful boys, don't let a bee sting you".

New Year's Biking

I occasionally joke that scenes like this would really be pretty, if we didn't live here! In other words, we don't enjoy the beauty that is around us.

I've had a couple notable bike rides so far this year. On New Year's Day Jake, one of my son-in-laws (Kristy's husband) joined me for a 10 mile ride. It was in one of my favorite areas to ride. We hauled the bikes to the Hale cemetery, just west of Oak Grove, and started our ride from there. We went in a general northwest direction, and turned around after passing the Missouri state line.
We stopped and visited with a few people I knew along the way, that's always fun.

On Saturday, January 3rd, Jerrie Joubert and I started from the studio, and rode in the same direction as my New Year's Day ride. But this time we rode out the "Ridge Road" and came out on hwy 86, near Trace Hollow in Missouri. We then went down the road into the Trace Hollow area, and came back up by the Boy's Ranch. It was a very hilly 28 1/2 miles!
It was a GREAT day for a bike ride, with temps in the lower 70's.

End of Year Bicycling Statistics

In July, I began to keep track of my bicycling miles. Here's my July-December stats:
Total miles ridden: 1,675.
Most miles ridden in one day: 70.
Top speed (off hill near Roaring River): 39mph (would have gone faster, but I hit the brakes).
Coldest temperature: 33 degrees (not sure about hottest, but rode some in upper 90's.
Most miles ridden in one month: 437.51 (September).

Santa Bikes In Berryville

This young boy wanted to give Santa money, but Santa told him to keep it. He got a candy cane.
This lady came up to Santa and asked to take his photo. Then she asked questions like, "So, did you loose a bet?". Santa told her no, that he just like to ride a bicycle. After a few questions she introduced herself, she was a reporter for the Harrison Daily Times!

Santa enjoyed biking in Berryville. Lots of people honked and waved. Lots of cell phone cameras! Several people wanted to have their photos taken with Santa.
This may become a tradition!

Just Signed Up To Do RAGBRAI

What's RAGBRAI?
It's the "Register's Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa".
Or in more simple terms, about 12,000 (yep, that twelve-thousand) or so people on bicycles riding across the state of Iowa one week in the summer of 2009.
It's an annual event, this coming summer with be the 37th annual ride. It's not a race. Just a tour.
I've read where the origins of the ride began when one writer of the Des Moines Register newspaper said to another rider (both cyclists) "Why don't you ride your bike across the state and write a story about it". His reply was something like, "Ok, I will, if you'll go with me".
About six weeks before they were to leave, they wrote a small, one paragraph story in their paper, telling readers of their plans, and inviting anyone to join in who wanted.
The day they began the ride, 200 people showed up! About half those rode the entire route with them.
After writing the story about their ride, they began to get many inquiries, things like, "We would have loved to join you, but 6 weeks was not adequate time to prepare" or "Any chance you'll make this an annual event". So, after some discussion, they decided, "Sure, let's do it again next summer". This time about 2,000 people showed up on bikes!
The event grew, and grew, until one day there were estimated to be 23,000 people riding! At this point, it was getting too big to handle, so they began a lottery system to choose the riders. Now, you have to send in your application, and if more then 8,000 people apply, they do a drawing to see who gets chosen to be a registered rider. From what I've read, many more non-registered riders join in, that's how they get the 12,000 or so participants. From what I read, most people who apply get to ride. So I'm hopeful I'll be chosen.
Each year a different route is chosen. They begin at the far western edge of Iowa, and go to the far eastern edge. It takes 7 days.
There are charter services that will transport you to and from the ends of the ride.
As a registered rider, they haul your tent and baggage in tractor trailer trucks. Each night they stop in rather small towns, perhaps the size of Berryville. You camp in school yards, football fields, private resident's yards, etc.
It's a huge fund raiser for local schools, churches, and civic groups as they sponsor spaghetti suppers, ice cream socials, watermelon feeds, pancake breakfasts, etc. Oh, and I hear there's plenty of pie to eat! Each town the ride goes though participates my making essentials available to riders....food, drink and entertainment.
Depending on the route, you ride 60 to 90 miles a day.
The only part I'm a bit concerned about is, riding that far, sleeping on the ground in a tent, then doing it all again the next day. I sure do enjoy a nice, soft bed at night! Hopefully, I'll be able to contact some photographer friends along the way who'll invite me to stay in their homes!

Larry Judges Photo Competition

On November 10, Larry traveled to Nash, Texas to serve as one of three judges of a photo competition for the Ark-La-Tex Professional Photographer's Guild. Member photographers enter photos for scoring and critique by the panel of Master Photographers. Awards are then given to the top images in each catagory. Competition catagories include portrait, wedding, commercial, and electronic imaging. Before the judging, they were treated to a bbq dinner.

Picture in the photo are Larry Plumlee, Carmen Tedder (print competition chairman), and the other two print judges, Bill Hedrick from Kilgore, Texas and Robert O. Seat from Batesville, Arkansas.

Ok, guys. Put on your thinking cap a minute. How much are they advertising their movie rentals? If something is priced "$99", then that means ninety-nine dollars, right? Ok, it you add a decimal point and make it be "$.99", then we know that means ninety-nine cents, right? Now, if something is priced "99 cents", then that's ninety-nine cents, right? Ok, if you add the decimal point and make it ".99 cents", then in reality the price is no longer "99 cents", but it's "point 99 cents", or in other words ninety-nine, one-hundredths of a penny, correct? It's a bit less than one penny each, ten for a dime, one-hundred for a dollar, etc.
One word of caution, never try and convince a store clerk of that!
Sorry, just one of my little pet peeves!

I guess being raised a Baptist, I found this sign a bit funny.
This was a sign at the store that advertised movies for ".99 cents". Guess they make up for the cheap movies by selling expensive beer!

Sunday Bike Ride - Springfield

Heading west on hwy 186 near Kristy and Jake's home in Rogersville. Wonder roads, with few hills. I met several others on bikes. Someone told me it was a very popular road for area bikers. On the Sequiota Trail, just west of 65 and south of 60. As you can see, it's used by many people, both bikes and walkers/joggers on a nice Sunday!
You wouldn't think from the looks of this wooded area, that it's not much more than a mile to Battlefield Mall!
I stopped for a Dr Pepper slushie at a convenience store, one of my favorites! Can't find those in Carroll County. Takes a while to drink it, so found out it would fit in my second water bottle cage!
The maples showing first signs of fall colors. Should be really pretty in another couple of weeks.

The bike path continues on to western Springfield. This section is just west of Campbell, between the east and west lanes of Sunset.
It was a delight to discover Nathanael Green/Close Memorial Park. Lots of nice landscaping and flowers.
Here's the bike map. I rode from the eastern most point to the western most point (the route marked in green).
Several tunnels go under the highways. Lajunta said this looked like something from X-Files.

We visited Kristy and Jake at their new home in Rogersville this past week end. I threw in my bike, just in case it was a nice day for biking.
It was a wonderful day! I left their home, and rode west on hwy 186. It was a straight shot for several miles. Only one big hill the whole day!

I wasn't really sure where I was going, or where I'd end up, but I had plenty of time to explore. I headed in a general direction towards Springfield, and was pleasantly surprised when I came to Lake Springfield, and the Sequiota Trail. I've ridden it several times. I rode to the far north end of the trail, at Pershing Middle School. I then headed west, following the many "Bike Route" signs. This took me through several residential areas. Traffic was not bad at all.

Beginning to get a bit hungry after noon, I came to Buckingham's BBQ. Enjoyed a BBQ pork sandwich.

I didn't realize the bike trail went to west Springfield. Rode out south of the federal prison, then through Nathanael Greene/Close Memorial Park.

Passed a parking lot that was having some sort of a car show. Thought I'd ride through it, but seen a sign, "No bicycles". So I turned around and went back on the bike trail. Finally, I came to a dead end and a "No Trespassing" sign.

I turned around, rode back east to National St, then headed south to A&B Cycle (that was some alert riding!). My bike had been making a "popping" noise that I wanted checked out. Before long, going to need to replace some sprockets. I left the bike with them, and Karla and Jason picked me up, and took me back to Kristy's.

Fun Pool Session

We recently did a senior session for Tori from Berryville. At the studio, they told me about her involvement in competitive swimming. We got to talking, and decided we needed to do another session with her, this one at the Berryville Community Center pool.

We really enjoy doing location photography, as this really captures the personality of the subject. Ask us about doing a portrait session with our favorite hobby or special location.

2 Bicycles, 4 States, 6 Days, 267 Miles

My cousin Steve and I planned to ride the Katy Trail in Missouri last week. However, Hurricane Ike has other plans. Planned to leave out Tuesday morning, but late Monday we learned that much of the Katy was flooded! So we found another route.

From home, we headed north, then west. Our adventure took us as far west as Grove, Oklahoma, and north to Pittsburg, Kansas, before heading back home.

2008 Tour of Missouri, Stage 2

September 9, I had the privilege of being at the finish line of stage 2 of the 2008 Tour of Missouri. Stage 2 was a 126 mile ride (longest of this year's event). They began the race in Clinton and finished in Springfield. Average speed was 27.5mph! Note from Larry: I do good to average 12 mph when I ride!
The race featured some of the top cyclist in the world, including many who participated in this year's Tour de France.
Winner was Mark Cavendish from Great Britian. Cavendish has made a big name for himself this year, having won 4 stages of the Tour de France.
Currently, Cavendish has been called the fastest bike sprinter in the world.

Once in Springfield, riders made two "circuit" loops, riding past us 3 times. So I had two chances for practice shots, before the big winning moment.
Race leader, and day's winner Mark Cavendish (in yellow jersey) is right on the rear wheel of George Hincapie. Hincapie was last years Tour of Missouri winner, and rode for many years with Lance Armstrong on Team Discovery and US Postal. They rode one more loop after this photo.

About 10 minutes or less after the race was over. Yeah, really looks like he just rode 126 miles in about 5 hours, doesn't he? If that were me, I'd be laying on the ground, gasping for air! But those guys hardly seem to have worked up a sweat! How do they do it!

Missouri/Kansas Bicycle Trip

On Monday, August 26, I traveled to Joplin, Missouri to visit and bike with my friend, David Summerlin. David is a photographer, and has a studio in Joplin (http://www.summerlinstudio.com/). I always enjoy visiting with David. Not only is he a very talented photographer, but also a great all-around guy. He always has a very positive attitude! David had started biking earlier this year, and had been inviting me to come up some Monday and ride. Was a great ride. Weather could not have been more perfect. We rode west from his studio into Kansas. We finished with a nice 33 mile ride.
Ok, Dave, time to come down and do a ride with me!

Roads look much different than what I usually ride, long straight roads with few hills!
Ok, so it's a bit hard to shoot a photo while riding!
Less than 7 miles into our ride, I had to stop and fix a flat tire on my bike. I hit something in the road that caused the puncture. I think that's the first time I've had to fix a bike flat in 2 or 3 years while on the road! I always carry a few tools, including a patch kit and pump or CO2 cartridges. After a quick stop, it was back on the road again!
Lunch time! Great BBQ pork sandwich at the Smokehouse in Baxter Springs, KS. I love to check out new eating establishments. Always thought it would be fun to do a road trip and not eat at any chain restaurants, just experience the local flavor. This one was a pleasant surprise. Good food. Good Price (less than $6 for pulled pork sandwich and cole slaw). Friendly and fast service!
Hmmm, maybe I should do a big ride and write some sort of "food guide". Could combine 3 of my favorites. . . eating, biking, and photography!

Another bridge, this one near Riverton, KS. Was a dam in the background. Had to watch for cars, so Russ wouldn't get run over while taking the photo.

Looks like these workers may have been doing repair work on this dam. Looks likes lots of logs have washed over the dam.

Soon To Celebrate 30 Years In Business!

Can you believe that our studio is almost 30 years old?
In October 1978, I quit my job and started working in photography full time. I had worked for a couple years for Larimer Publications in Green Forest, as a darkroom technician. I also covered some high school and jr high football and basketball games.
When I began photography full time, we didn't even have a studio! We lived in a 12'x60' mobile home, located in the yard where we now photograph. I had a portable background that I'd set up in the living room, and also did lots of outdoor portraits. We also did many weddings.
From Thanksgiving until Christmas of that year, we never seen our kitchen table, as it was covered with photography orders. In January 1979, we began building our studio building.
Beginning in next month (September 2008), we will be celebrating our 30 years in business. Be watching our web site for specials on most all our services during the coming year. We will be introducing new services, especially for children's portraits. Stop by and visit us at the Carroll County Fair!

Are We Having Fun???

This year for Father's Day, Lajunta bought me a bike trailer, big enough to haul two kids. I thought it was a bit premature, as I didn't think the grandbabies were big enough to ride. I first rode Reagan a time or two (she's now 7 months). Then last week, I put Ian in the bike, he's just 4 months. They both love it!

I've ridden them several times, each time I stopped, not because they were restless, but because I was tired (I ride them in the yard mostly, not easy riding).
Last Friday we put them both in for the first time. Probably rode them for 30 minutes. Ian went to sleep, Reagan almost did. They seemed very contented!
Yesterday, they both got fussy while Lajunta was rocking them in the house. I took them out, put them in the trailer, and took off. After about 30 minutes, they were both asleep! So I unhooked the trailer, and pulled it inside the house, so they could sleep. Lajunta watched them til they woke up.

Here are 4 of the hundred or so photos Lajunta took of me riding them. As you can see, they are secure. There is a shoulder harness and a seat belt. Plus we keep a close eye on them. We do have little bike helmets for them, but with two in there, sort of afraid they might hurt each other.

Possible Tornado Hits Oak Grove!

A storm on Thursday night, July 3, hit Oak Grove, near the four-way stop light area. At least one resident reported seeing a funnel cloud drop down from the sky. The storm hit at approximately 8:45 PM with little warning. Most damage in the area was limited to within one-half mile of the stoplight.
Downed trees blocked roads for more than an hour. One tree blocked highway 21 about 50 yards north of the stoplight. Another tree, about 50 yards to the west, blocked highway 21 west. Power was out in the area for over 3 hours.
One residence lost half the roof over a large shop/garage area.
The area around the softball field was hardest hit. Both dugouts where totally destroyed, and more than a half dozen large trees were either up-rooted, or snapped in two on the property. There were several other large trees uprooted around the town.
There were no reports of personal injuries that I heard of.
Emergency personell quickly responded to the scene. Deputies from the Carroll County Sheriff's Departmart directed traffic, as the Arkansas State Highway Department along with the Oak Grove Volunteer Fire Department cleared the fallen trees from the highways.

Grandpa's New Biking Buddy

On Monday, we rode back and forth in front of the house, and up to the neighbors. Reagan rode for a full mile!
She is safely secured. The trailer has shoulder harnesses and a seat belt.

For my Father's Day gift this year, I received a two-wheeled trailer to pull behind my bicycle, which is designed to haul two small children. With two new grandbabies, it looks like I'm going to be having some fun!

We've not tried it with Ian (he's just over 3 months, not setting up yet), but Reagan is sitting up, so I've been giving her a few rides! She seems to love it!

Grandbaby Update

Last week was time for Reagan and Ian's 6 month and 3 month portraits. What a delight! They were both in good moods, and we got a ton of nice photos. Once a baby is able to sit up (usually at 6 months), we can do them outdoors. So we did Reagan by some of our new plants. Ian is doing well, holding up his head, which is what we like in a 3 month portrait.

Monday Morning Surprise

I arrived at the studio at 9:00 on Monday morning, and was met with a surprise. There was a very strong wind that hit in the middle of the night, and blew over a tree by our studio. It missed our propane tank, but hit the side of the studio. No major damage to the building, but it did knock off the dish that's mounted on the studio for our internet. There was some damage to a facer board, and the stove pipe that vents our heater. Sure glad this didn't happen during business hours, as the tree fell right were people usually park!

It also knocked down the fence.
My nephew, Cory, came to the rescue. He brought his chain saw and did some cutting. My brother Terry (Cory's dad) brought his tractor and pulled the tree away from the building. It's sure great to have family around!

New Studio Option A Gas-Saver

With gas prices soaring, I've been thinking, "How can I help our clients cut down on their trips to the studio, saving time and gas?" We came up with an idea. We've tested it, and seems to work wonderful! Here's the details.
In the past, when you placed a portrait order, you came to the studio and viewed your images on our 40"x60" screen (if you live locally, that's still the best way to order). But what if you live an hour or more away, and could order at home? Or what if you are just busy, and would like the convenience of ordering from home? I'm not talking about some non-personal internet "shopping cart", but a really cool situation, where we talk to you on the phone, and you view OUR computer screen right in your home!
Many of you will still prefer to come to the studio, and sit down with us to place your order, and that's perfectly fine. We love to do that. But for those people whose schedules are busy, or who want to save some gas, we now offer the in-home ordering. This doesn't have to be done during business hours. We can do evening appointments too!
We are excited to offer this special option, especially for our clients who drive an hour or more to our studio.
Way back in the film days, clients made four trips to the studio: #1. photo session, #2. pick up proofs, #3. place order, and #4. pick up order. Now, you could just do one trip, and that's for your session. You can order with our in-home ordering, and have it shipped to you!

Arkansas Motor Vehicle Law Concerning Bicycles

Today as I was riding my bicycle to work, I was reminded of a law that was passed in Arkansas last year. When you pass someone on a bicycle, you must give them at least 3' or more of space.

I was riding this morning and was meeting two cars. Someone in a mini-van came up behind me, blew their horn, and didn't slow down a bit, passing me at the same time we met the cars. Luckily, I have a mirror on my glasses, and seen what was happening, so I bailed out of the way. This, on a narrow road, with no paved shoulder to speak of.
So, you may ask, "Why don't bicycles ride far to the right, at the very edge of the road, especially when being passed by a car?" I'll tell you why I don't. #1: There is lots of rocks, glass, and other debris at the edge of the road. You can get flats, or worse yet, cause you to crash. #2: The road is smoother if you ride in spot where right tire of cars go (very noticable if you have those tiny tires inflated to 110psi). #3: Cars see you more easily if you ride over a bit from the edge.
Give cyclists a break! Remember when you see someone on a bike, it's more gas for your car!

Welcome Back, Kayla

Our youngest daughter, Kayla, is now working for us at the studio. All our daughters helped as they were growing up, so she's no stranger to the business.

Kayla is married to Jerod Newberry, and they have one son, Ian.

Kayla's main job will be to monitor our orders-in-process, and make sure everything gets done on time. She has a good sense of organization and we look forward to having her in the studio this year. We hope this will be create more efficient service to all our clients.

Lajunta will still come in to handle sales, but Kayla will more than likely be the one who answers the phone when you call.

I decided to drive up to the top of Saunder's Heights (the mountain over-looking Berryville). That's where both these were taken.

Bicycling Family

A couple years ago, I began reading an on-line travelogue about the Vogel family from Idaho. The parents took a year off from teaching school, and did a cross country bicycle tour with their twin boys (about 8 y/o at the time) that included a loop through Mexico.
At one point, I was busy and didn't check their travelogue for a few weeks. Imagine my shock and disappointment when I found out they had come through Arkansas, and had to stop a few days in Harrison due to bad weather! I would have so enjoyed meeting them, and perhaps treating them to a hot meal, to hear first-hand about their journey.
Well, this summer they hit the road again. Think a year-long trip across the US was a big deal? This time, they are traveling the Pan-American Highway, a 2 1/2 year trip from northern Alaska to the tip of South America in Argentina!

High Water!

Like most of the midwest, we had plenty of rain this week. Berryville reported about 6 1/2". I drove around and took a few photos. This one was taken from the hwy 62 bridge, just west of Berryville, on Wednesday. This is where the Kings and Osage Rivers come together.
Yocum Creek bridge near Oak Grove had damage. The county road crew had it repaired by Thursday afternoon.
Have you seen senior photos we've taken at Yocum Creek? Well, not today! This was taken Thursday afternoon. The day before, the water was over the bridge.

Ian Wade, One Week Old

Hogs Fans Say "Farewell" To Seniors

For the last four years, I've covered the college basketball careeer of Steven Hill at the University of Arkansas. We got acquainted with Steven his senior year at Branson, when he came to our studio for his senior portraits.
I was photographing a basketball game at Branson the year after Steven graduated. While visiting with the sports editor from the Branson Daily Independent, I asked, "Would you guys like to have some photos of Steven Hill playing at Fayetteville, to run in your paper?" If so, I told him I'd be glad to shoot them, if he'd get me a press pass. I did some research to find out what I'd need to do, and we were set! That was near the end of the season, so I only shot two games that year.
The next 3 seasons, I was a regular at home games at Bud Walton Arena. It has been a blast! What more could a guy ask for? #1, I got in free, #2 I got the best seat in the house, and #3, free food in the media room!
I met many wonderful people at games. Thank you Steven, for four memorable years at the UofA!

Here's the story:

Six senior Arkansas Razorbacks were honored in pre-game ceremonies on March 8, at Bud Walton Arena in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Those honored were Gary Ervin, Sonny Weems, Darian Townes, Vincent Hunter, Charles Thomas, and former Branson Pirate Steven Hill. The senior team members and their parents were introduced to the fans. First year coach John Pelphrey congratulated each senior and their family at center court and presented them with a framed jersey. Steven Hill closes out his career as the #2 all-time shot blocker at Arkansas. After Saturday’s game, his total was 311 rejections. The Arkansas record is held by Oliver Miller, who had 345 block during the years of 1989-92. Hill is the only Razorback to record 90 or more blocked shots in more than one season. In SEC play, Hill is #4 on the all-time shot block record list. SEC leader is Shaquille O’Neal (412 blocks) who played for LSU from 1990-92. Hill has played in 127 games with 96 starts as a Razorback and scored 527 points (4.2 per game).

The Hogs closed out the regular season with a 77-64 victory over the Auburn Tigers. Sophomore Patrick Beverly led the Hogs with 27 points, including 6 for 6 on 3-point attempts. Steven Hill was 2 for 2 on field goals and had 3 blocks. Hill gave the hogs a 2-0 lead with a slam-dunk on an ally-oop pass from Sonny Weems. Saturday’s win was first-year coach John Pelphrey’s 100th career win as a coach. It was also Arkansas’ 20 victory of the season, the most every for a first-year coach. Arkansas finishes the regular season with a 20-10 record, with 9-7 in SEC play. There record was Bud Walton Arena was 15-1 for the year.

Sometimes the action is just a few feet away from me. Luckily, I was never hurt during a game. I did fall over backwards once in the stadium seat that I set in, as the action got too close. And once a player stepped on my foot. Had a player or two jump over me. And I got to deflect a ball or two. Oh, almost forgot. . . . . Boss Hog kicked me once. That's the big inflated mascot that's about 9' tall.

Now I guess I can advertise, "As seen on ESPN". . lol Yes, I had to set up my camera and take a photo of the tv screen.

Ian Wade arrived Sunday morning, shortly before noon. He weighed 6 lb. 13 oz. Everyone is doing fine. Ian's mommy is our youngest daughter, Kayla, who is married to Jerod Newberry.

Arkansas Upsets #18 Vanderbilt

In the above photo, it's a "touch" I got in the game. I was photographing with my right hand, and seen the ball coming at me. I was able to get this photo, just before I deflected the ball with my left hand.

On March 1, the Arkansas Razorbacks hosted the Vanderbilt Commodores at Bud Walton Arena in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The #18 ranked Commodores were coming off a big victory against #1 ranked Tennessee earlier in the week.
The Hogs, in front of a crowd of 18,366, pulled off one of their biggest upsets of the season with a 78-73 victory. Arkansas had been in a slump, loosing four of their last five games. The win on Saturday was needed for the Hogs to have a chance for an appearance in the NCAA tournament.
Leading the Hogs in scoring was Sonny Weems with 20. Patrick Beverly followed with 17, which included an impressive 5 for 7 on 3 point attempts.
Steven Hill added 4 blocked shots to his impressive resume. Hill now has over 300 career blocks at Arkansas, which puts him at #2 in the Arkansas record books, and #4 in the SEC.
The Razorsback complete there regular season on Saturday with a home game against Auburn. It will be Senior Day, when the senior team members will be honored. Tip off is at 5:05 and will be broadcast on ESPN Classic.

CofO Lady Bobcats Take Semi Final Contest

On February 17, Larry and Lajunta participated in a bridal fair held in Bentonville, AR. Vendors from NW Arkansas, SW Missouri, and NE Oklahoma were in attendance.
Vendors were asked to submit samples of their wedding products for judging, called the Designer Wedding Challenge. Judging was from those in attendance, including the future brides and their friends and family. There were divisions for Floral, Tablescape, Stationery, Cinematography, and Photography. There were 21 photos entered in the photography division. One of Larry's entries was the winning entry! Lajunta and Larry at their booth.

The prize was a 5 day, 4 night Mexican Getaway vacation! The Plumlee's have their choice of going to one of 4 locations in Mexico: Cancun, Acapulco, Puerto Vallarta, or Mazatlan.
Above is the entry by Larry that was picked as the top wedding photo in the show. Photo was taken at College of the Ozarks, Keeter Center, at the wedding of Joel and Callie Dolloff. The winning photo will be part of the Fall/Winter issue of Weddings With Style Intl Magazine's feature article on the Designer Wedding Challenge.

We Dodged A Weather Bullet

The worst of this week's ice storm went to our north. There were no power outages in our area that I knew of.

It was very beautiful Tuesday morning when we came to work. The roads were clear, but the foliage looked like a crystal wonderland.

Polaroid To Stop Manufacting Instant Film

Technology has caused another photo giant to drop a previously popular product. Polaroid has announced it will stop producing instant film next year. They began producing instant film in 1948.
Special polaroid film-backs were manufactured for professional cameras. Prior to digital, we used those to do "test shots". You simply inserted a "dark slide" into the film back on your camera (you could do that in mid-roll), removed it from the camera, and attached the polaroid back.
I also had a professional polaroid "ID" camera for taking instant passport photos.

On Saturday, January 12, I photographed the wedding of Monty Williams and Lori Boyd. The wedding ceremony was held at the home of Lori's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ron Boyd.

It was a "historic" event for Carroll County, as the reception was held at the Grand View Hotel on the square in Berryville. I've lived in Carroll County my whole life, I don't ever recall being inside the building. It's been vacant for as long as I can remember. The reception was the first event to be held in the building since it is being restored.

Razorbacks Defeat Crimson Tide in Over-Time

I had the pleasure of photographing the Arkansas vs. Alabama basketball game on Sunday afternoon, January 13. I am a bit sad, as this may be the last season that I'll get to photograph the Hogs. For the past four years, I've been covering Steven Hill for the Branson Daily Independent newspaper. After this year and Steven's graduation, I may not have a source for a press pass, so I'm keeping my ears open. The games are fun to photograph, and all the people at Bud Walton are so friendly. I always joke about it being a dream job. #1, I get in free, #2, I have the best seat in the house, and #3, I get to hang out in the media room where there is free food.

Here's my report on the game.

The Arkansas Razorbacks improved their conference record to 2-0 (13-3 overall) with a 71-67 over-time victory over the Alabama Crimson Tide, at Bud WaltonArena in Fayetteville, AR, on Sunday, January 13. The Hogs came out fire up, and built a 20-8 lead. Alabama’s first two shot attempts were rejected by the Hogs 7’ center, former Branson Pirate Steven Hill.

At half time the Razorbacks led 36-28.

With the Hogs shooting hands going cold at the end of regulation play, the Crimson Tide went on a 7-1 scoring run to tie the game at 60 with less than 20 seconds to play. Alabama had trailed the entire game.

Leading the Razorbacks in scoring were Darian Towneswith 18 and Sonny Weems with 17.

Last year’s SEC Defensive Player of the Year, Steven Hill contributed 3 blocks, and one point. He moved into the #5 spot on the all-time SEC shot blockingrecord list. A senior marketing major at theUniversity of Arkansas, Hill is widely thought to beheaded for a career in the NBA after graduation.

Senior Representatives are students who are willing to help us promote our senior photography to their friends and classmates. For being a rep, seniors get free photos, extra photo sessions, and discounts on their senior orders. It's a win-win for everyone!

Our 2008 had a wonderful beginning. Since we added 3 son-in-laws, and one grandbaby in 2007, we told our kids, "Go see your in-laws are Christmas day. Just make sure you can come to our house on New Year's Day, and we'll celebrate Christmas then!" It worked out great, we had the kids for the whole day! Here we are, getting ready for our lunch. That evening, we celebrated Larry's birthday (December 26th is the actual day).

Restaurant Opens in Oak Grove

We have a new business in Oak Grove! It's called, "MiCasita Panaderia Restarante". It's only been open a week.
Today, our family went there for lunch. It was really, really nice! Not at all what you'd expect to find in a tiny town like Oak Grove.

The restaurant is located in the old store building, just west of the stop sign. When I was a small boy, this was the "Plumlee and Callen" store. It was an old fashion store that sold everything from groceries to cattle feed.

These are the restaurant owners, Jane and Lasaro Hernandez. When you visit the establishment, be sure and read the interesting story about how Lasaro came to the US. He is a native Cuban, and came here in 1982 with 5 of his friends on a 6'x3' row boat! The full story is written on their menu. Not only is this a restaurant, but they make many types of caribbean style breads. They also have good chocolate chip/pecan cookies! Save room for one (or two) after your meal!

Two photos above is our family (or part of us) at the restaurant. We were missing one daughter and two son-in-laws. The business really looks nice on the inside. A lot of work has gone into making this a very comfortable place to eat.
This is their "Carne con Papa". Beef and Potatoes Marinated and Stewed in a robust tomato sauce dressed Cuban style!

"Carne Asada" (caribbean style).Marinated Grilled Steak.
Ooops, forgot the name of this one. Steak with grilled onions. Also a fried fruit, something similar to bananas.
"Mojarra Frita" (Guatemalan style). This was what I ate, very good! Tilapia, marinated and friend to crispy perfection.
You have your choice of white or yellow rice and Cuban or Central American Style Black Beans. I sampled both beans, both were good, but the Cuban style was my favorite.

There menu says, "We offer a warm, cozy home away from home atmosphere. Elegant dining in a clean, fresh, newly remodeled building in Oak Grove, AR with all meals made to order fresh daily."
They are open 7 days a week, 11:00am to 8:00pm.

Tony Snow Visits College of the Ozarks.

On December 6, Tony Snow, former Bush Presidential Press Secretary and former host of Fox News Sunday visited the College of the Ozarks. We were once again honored to have been chosen to cover the event for the college. The visit began with a tour of the college, and then a lecture to the journalism students. That was followed by a press conference and dinner. A convocation was held in the gymnasium, where he addressed a large crowd of students and many others from the community. A VIP reception followed in the Keeter Center, where we did photos of Mr. Snow with specially invited guests. During the tour of the college, and old friend of Mr. Snows dropped in to say "Hi", and join the tour. I was sure glad I didn't embarrass myself. I didn't recognize the "guest", so I asked the College President's assistant who the fellow was. She replied, "That's Larry Gatlin". (That's as in country musician, Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers.) Not long after that, he turned to me, shook my hand and ask, "What is your name?". I replied, "I'm Larry Plumlee". He replied, something like, "I think I can remember that name". I would have been really embarrassed had I not known who he was and said something like, "Any you are?"
One of the favorite places to tour on campus is the Ralph Foster Museum. The original Beverly Hillbilly's car was donated and is on display in the museum. You can get your photo taken in the car. I once photographed former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in the car on her visit to the museum. Anyway, we did a few photos of Mr. Snow in the car, then Larry Gatlin hopped in with him. If only I would have had a video camera, I would have gotten a great clip for YouTube. The two of them began singing the them song to the Beverly Hillbilly's tv show! It was hilarioius!!!!

Our Daughter Kristy Is Married!

Kristy and Jake were married on Sunday, November 11. Kristy is the oldest of the Plumlee girls. It could not have been more perfect. The weather was so nice.
The wedding was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Jackson in Springfield. Kristy works with Mr. Jackson at DMP. They were wonderful hosts for this very special occasion.

We are starting to get inquiries about sessions around the holidays. Since all our family is in this area, we never have to travel very far over the holidays. Larry and Kelly Attend Pro Photo Convention

Larry and Kelly attended the Professional Photographers of the Ozarks, annual fall convention, held October 28-30, at the Inn of the Ozarks in Eureka Springs. Around 150 pro photographers from the midwest were in attendance.
The convention featured several educational events.

Larry said, "I've been attending this group's convention for 30 years. Each time, I learn something new."

The attached photo is from a test session that Larry did after returning from the convention, using a new lighting technique he learned at the convention. You'll be seeing more of this type work in future sessions.

It's Razorback Basketball Time!

During warm up time before the game, some of the Razorbacks exhibited their dunking skills.

First year coach, John Pelphrey, came into the game for a few minutes and hit this 3 pointer.

Friday night, October 26 was the Razorback Red/White Scrimmage game. I am once again getting to cover the games for the Branson Daily Independent newspaper. I am in the process of doing an article about Steven Hill for the newspaper.

Like Mother, Like Daughter

This year continues to be "eventful" for the Plumlee family. Last Sunday morning, Lajunta and Larry were going for a walk. They were walking on the road, less then 1/4 mile from their home. Lajunta stumbled and fell! She landed on her right hand, and the side of her face hit the pavement. They had to use the cell phone to call Kim to come and pick them up. Her arm kept hurting, so on Monday she visited the doctor. After a few x-rays, the doctor said she was very lucky to not have broken her arm, it was just a bad bruise. They put her arm in a sling, gave her some pain medicine.

Fast forward to Wednesday. Kelly was leaving the studio a little early. She was walking to her car, turned her ankle, and fell, landing on her hand! She couldn't get up, so she got her cell phone and called Kim in the studio. So for the second time in the week, Kim had a call, "Come and get me, I've fallen down".

Luckily, she didn't fall on her stomach (she's 7 1/2 months pregnant). Her wrist kept hurting, so she went to see the doctor. The doctor didn't think it was broke, but put her arm in a sling and gave her some pain medicine.

What's Your Most Prized Possession?

I was recently watching the news on tv. It was a story about the awful wild fires they are having in California, destroying hundreds of homes.
People were evacuating their homes. What was the most prized possessions they were taking? Their tvs? Their computers? Suitcases of clothing? No. It was their photographs.
Reminded me of when I was on the Oak Grove fire department. When we'd go to a house fire, if there was time to remove items from the home, people would always ask, "Can you grab the photos on from the walls?" They never asked us to go in and bring out a piece of furniture or other material possession. It was always the photos.
Times like this are a bit humbling for me, to realize that the photos we create for people will become such priceless heirlooms. It certainly gives me food for thought, to make sure I always do the best I can for each and every session.

Whitley

We recently did a senior session for Whitley. After we finished the studio session, we hit the road for a few "urban" sets. We don't like to shoot the very same poses and sets for everyone, so occasionally it's fun to get out of the studio and find some new locations to photograph. Kelly also did some really cool effects on her photos.

Recently, we had a client pick up a portrait order that had used a payment plan. She made the comment, "I bet a lot of people don't know you do payment plans". I guess we've been doing photography for so many years, we sometimes assume too much. So I thought, "Hummmm, maybe I should post this on our blog".
Our payment plan is simple. Once an order is placed, it is on hold until one-half of the order has been paid. You can pay however much you want, however often you want. Once the order is half paid, we send it to Kelly and she does her magic, and uploads it to our lab. You can continue to make payments, and when it is paid in full, you can pick it up! No part of an order can be picked up until the entire order is paid in full.
Sometimes when we book a wedding, it may be a year away. Sometimes in these situations, a bride will begin making monthly payments, so that by the wedding, her album is paid in full.
Lajunta and I raised 5 kids, so we know that sometimes it does help to have the option of payments.
We will be very happy to discuss any questions you may have about payment plans!

Branson Bridal Fair

We were next to a booth, featuring ring pillows and jewelry. These are the creations of Anne Banister, from Shell Knob, MO. We have done several photo sessions for Anne, as she markets her products nation-wide.
We were right across from the catering department from Country Mart. They let us sample some of their cake.
We enjoyed visiting with the "bride and groom" who greeted everyone as they arrived. We got them to ham it up a bit for a photo.
This young lady was in Anne Banister's booth, modeling jewerly and ring pillows. During one of the slow times, we stepped outside and did a few photos for her.

On Saturday, October 6th, we participated in a bridal fair at the Tri Lakes Center in Branson. It was the first year for the event, which had around 50 vendors!

Larry and Kelly both were in attendance, answering questions and showing one of our recent wedding albums.

We now have a very simple pricing system on our weddings. Our packages are based on the size of the wedding. Brides only need to choose whether they want a "CD Only" coverage, or "CD and Album". You get a finished album of your wedding, for the package you book, no having to edit down to a pre-determined number of sizes or spend a bunch of extra money for more photos in your album.

Larry photographs the wedding, and Kelly layouts out an album for the bride. We make a proof for them to approve, or make any changes. The last two albums Kelly has done, both brides called and said, "We love the album exactly the way you have created it. No changes need to be made, we love it just the way it is".

Occasionally someone will ask, "Would you travel to Springfield to do a wedding, or Fayetteville?" Sure! When you have a studio in Oak Grove, you travel everywhere to do weddings! In the past two years, we have done weddings in Kansas City, St. Louis, and Milwaukee. In previous years, we have done weddings in Tulsa, Dallas, Little Rock, and Orlando. So if you are planning a wedding out of the area, check with us. If it works into our schedule, we might make you a good deal.

Ben From Berryville

We had a great time creating some nice senior portrait images for Ben from Berryville. We did the studio shots, then decided to go on-location for something different.

We are very versatile in our photography. That's one of the true marks of a professional, being able to adapt to different situations and creating a variety of styles.

Wacky Rumor! FALSE!!!!!

Today I was in town when one of our good clients came up to me and asked, "I want to ask you something. Can we not order photos from you any longer? Have you changed the way you do business?"
Puzzeled, I asked, "What do you mean?"
She said that someone had told her that when you come to Plumlee's for portraits, all they do is sell you a CD and the copyright, and you have to print your own photos. That was so ridiculous, I almost had to laugh! I was very glad she mentioned it to me, as it gave me a chance to set the record straight.
We do not sell the copyright on our portraits. I explained, that nothing had changed. On portrait sessions, we do the sitting, then the client decides if they want to view their images online, or view a proof book. When they are ready to place their order, an appointment is scheduled for them to come into the studio. Lajunta sits down with them and they view their images on our 40"x60" screen. They choose their favorite poses, tell us what sizes and quantities they want, and we process the order. Kelly prepares the order, does all her retouching magic, then she sends the order via the internet to the professional lab we have used for over 25 years and it is printed. The order is shipped back to us, where we inspect it to make sure it is up to our standards. We then notify our client that the order is ready to pick up.
We do offer digital files/copyright on our wedding photography, and some special event coverages (such as the recent Miss Carroll County Pageant). Most progressive wedding photographers today do offer digital files. That's because today's wedding coverages often include several hundred images! They may not all go into an album, but the bride certainly wants a copy of those images. Some brides are into scrapbooking, and want to do their own albums.
But even on weddings, you can still order photos from us, and you have the option of "CD only" or "CD plus album".
Remember, we are in a small town. You can hear all sorts of weird rumors.

Other rumors that we've heard, that are NOT true:

Rumor: "We heard you are moving your studio to Branson".
False: We do get a substancial amout of business from the Branson area, but we have no plans to move our studio. In the early 1990's, we did open a small, branch office in Branson. However, we found most our Branson area clients preferred to drive to Oak Grove for their session, as we had more sets and locations to choose from in Oak Grove. We closed it after 3 years. We do drop off orders at a frame shop (V&K Associates in Hollister) for people to pick up.

Rumor: "Does Walmart print all your photos?"
False: 99% of our photos are printed by a professional lab. OCCASIONALLY we do send a file to Walmart for printing. That happens when we need a rush photo printed. Occasionally, someone will call and ask, "I need a photo this afternoon, can you do it?" We also have them print things like ID photos, products where fast service is more important than high quality. Also, we occasionally need a sample, test print or business card that Walmart will print. If I have a couple of days to finish an order, my pro lab will give me rush service. If I need something in less than 24 hours, the only choice I have is to print it myself or send to Walmart.
So, if you see me in the line at Walmart picking up photos, you can be assured it's a rush job, not your portrait order!

We're always looking for something fun and different to do, so we decided that after we were done with his session at the studio, to see what other locations we could find. We were really happy with these images.

Trash The Dress

There is a new web site for brides who want to do a special photo session after their wedding and trash their wedding gown. The web site is trashthedress.com.

We recently did a senior session with Tifany from Berryville. Part of her session reminded me of the trash the dress site. She jumped into the creek wearing her formal! She had a great time, and we got some very interesting photos!

Back Alley Drummer

We recently did a senior session with Nik from Berryville. He wanted to do something fun with his drum set (we love it when a senior says, "I want something different!").

We are really blessed at both our home and studio, as we have terrific neighbors! For the field photo, we went across the road from the studio to the Hutchison's field. Then Nik packed up his drums, and we found a back alley in Berryville. I especially like the black and white image!

Larry and Lajunta Celebrate 30th Wedding Anniversary

On Sunday, September 23, Larry and Lajunta celebrated their 30th wedding anniversay. It was just a small celebration with all the daughters and son-in-laws present. Everyone came for lunch. The cake was made by Robin Capps.

They were married on September 24, 1977 at the Freewill Baptist Church in Oak Grove.
